Bi-directional payment channels

This allows participants to pay each other off-chain multiple number of times and only broadcast final balances to the network based on business rules defined in the smart contract. Hashed Time Lock Contracts

HTLC combines the concept of a time-lock with a hash-lock. Nuo uses HTLCs and Payment Channels to form Cross-Chain Payment Channels.

Payment Channels

A payment channel is a Lightning Network feature that gives two parties the possibility to make a number of transactions that aren’t recorded on the blockchain (off-chain).

Nuo Routing Protocol

NRP constructs the route for each transaction. For cross-chain transactions, LPs with best realtime conversion rates are selected providing users and businesses with cheapest-possible transactions.

How it works


Find Best Route

A Route comprises of an ordered set of all the blockchains and Liquidity Providers involved in the transaction. Payment Channels are used to connect the different blockchains and LPs together using a common hash function via HTLCs. Amongst all possible routes, the one with the least end-to-end transaction cost is selected in realtime.


Send transaction

Sender sends transaction request to recipient. Recipient generates a secret 'x', hashes it and sends back to the sender. Sender uses this hash to initiate the transaction and generate a conditional payment to the first LP. The LP forwards the transaction to the next entity thereby connecting Payment channels between different blockchains and LPs to the next entity enroute via HTLCs. Once the recipient receives the conditional payment from the last LP enroute, he reveals the secret 'x' to the sender and all the other entities involved knowing that he can safely redeem his money.


Settle Transaction

Once every member of the route has the secret 'x', each member uses it to settle their respective transactions back into the channel. This is done by finalising the final balances of each channel and updating the Payment Channel state to the final balances and invalidating the HTLC. In case transaction fails due to any reason, funds are returned back to the sender once time lock of the HTLC expires.
